Happy Birthday Smiley!

Today is Megan Hickey's birthday.  So who better to feature first on the Camp Reach for the Sky FLASHLIGHT?

Megan Hickey has been a volunteer with the American Cancer Society since 1999.  She started off her ACS career as a volunteer at Camp Reach for the Sky – Day Camp.  Since that first summer in 1999, she has held the titles of co-director, unit counselor, unit leader, and Day Camp program director.

In 2006 Megan joined the staff at Camp Reach for the Sky – Resident Oncology Camp.  For the past three years Megan has served on the program staff and has been assisting the leadership staff with the planning and implementation of the week.  In 2011, Megan will begin another term as program director.  However, this time she will be program director of Resident Oncology Camp!

You name it, she's done it.  Megan has also been an office intern, a volunteer and committee member for the Southern California Courageous Kids Day, a Coaches vs Cancer volunteer, a Making Strides Against Breast Cancer volunteer and a Relay For Life volunteer.  Megan has also shared her personal story at many ACS functions.

When Megan was 18 months old she was diagnosed with Stage 3 Rhabdomyosarcoma.  She underwent 3 years of intense surgeries, radiation and chemotherapy at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego. Like so many of the campers that we have seen throughout the history of CR4TS, Megan's battle against cancer was a long fought battle.

That would be Megan bottom left

Today, her life has come full circle.  Megan is now a nurse on the same hematology oncology unit at Rady’s Children’s Hospital she was once treated some 20+ years ago.

Camp Reach for the Sky's Megan Hickey makes a difference…

The American Cancer Society has done so much for me and my family.  This organization has allowed me to grow and become a successful young woman, public health graduate, and nurse.  I am thankful for all the friends that I have met through your programs, specifically Camp Reach for the Sky.  I will continue to dedicate myself to this organization, with the hope of touching someone’s life just as CR4TS volunteers did for me many years ago. Camp Makes a Difference... -Megan
