Rock the Vote: Sami Camp Name Proposal

Here at Camp Reach for the Sky, us counselors are given nicknames that we go by at camp. These nicknames could relate to a favorite hobby or activity, or just be a childhood alias that has stuck. Regardless of the nickname, it makes things more fun. We don't want our camp roster looking like a baby-naming book with regular name after regular name. Instead, our lineup is full of names like Yoda, Pinky, Bubbles, and Elf. The story behind each nickname is unique, and each name is permanent. Once a name is chosen, the name stays with the counselor for their entire Camp Reach for the Sky career. The campers learn the names and it would create a situation more confusing than Inception if counselors were changing their nicknames anytime they want. But once every hundred years or so, a situation comes along that warrants further examination and possible bending of the rules…and this is such a scenario. Like any person I have had experiences that have shaped my life and made me the person I am today. One of those crucial experiences is my experience with cancer as a child. I believe my experience with cancer and what it has taught me has truly changed my life. Cancer or more specifically my experience with Camp Reach for the Sky gave me the strength to be my own person and try new things. The day I learned what cancer was, I was eleven years old. That day was not the date of my diagnosis. In fact, I had been diagnosed with dermato fibro sarcoma protuberans three years before. As an eight year old in the hospital, cancer meant tests and surgeries and never sleeping at night. Cancer was having your entire second grade class making you get-well cards and your best friend losing them before they got to you. Cancer was eating bad hospital food, including but not limited to my favorite bean burrito Fridays, but getting all the delicious hospital pudding you wanted even at midnight. But ...

Camp Theme Days!!!

Please post your ideas in the comments section underneath this posting, OR post your ideas on the Facebook page, OR Tweet it to us. We had a lot of really cool suggestions last year. Time to get creative and come up with some new ideas for this year. Do it now before we pull the trigger on "Early American History of Sewing Machines Day..."
