Aha Moment

Mutual of Omaha has been traveling the country recording stories from people.  I was fortunate enough to be invited to share a story about CR4TS.  As you can imagine, it was tough coming up with just one.

I spoke of a girl we knew years ago who had relapsed two or three weeks before Resident Oncology Camp.  Her relapse hit very hard and she received a poor prognosis.  BUT!  She had such a great time the year prior and met some great campers, that there was no way she was going to miss out.  Knowing that she had very little time left with her family, the medical staff honestly didn't think we would see her at bus pick up.  But guess what, she was at bus pick up bright and early.  It was at that moment when Camp Reach for the Sky received the biggest gift imaginable.

She passed shortly after attending camp that summer.  But for that week, she was simply a normal kid without cancer having the time of her life.

Her story defines what we do.  The American Cancer Society camping programs dramatically improve the quality of life of those touched by this disease.  Thank you all for believing in our mission.  Thank you all for your involvement with CR4TS.  Most importantly thank you for making a difference in the lives of our campers.  Camp Makes A Difference...

  1. After 8 years of doing camp, it's stories and moments like these that remind me of how little the sacrifice of giving up 3 weeks of my life each year is monumentally rewarded by campers like her. thank you campers for making a difference in the lives of us counselors. Camp truly, indefinitely, immensely makes a difference...
